May 4, Spanish Help for Kristen

First off, I want to explain that I have not been posting new staff in April because one of my colleagues went away on holidays, and I've been very busy in my 9 to 5 job (and totally exhausted by the time I get home). So, sorry for the absence.

Next, I got an email from Kristen (from the USA) asking for help. I replied, but the email bounced. So, Kristen, if you're reading this, this is the help you asked for.

You asked how to translate this sentence: "If Nina were cleaner. I'd be glad to have seen her."

The answer is:

"Si Nina fuera mas limpia, me hubiera gustado verla".

Note that the verb TO BE becomes "fuera"; that's in subjunctive mode.

This link takes you to an explanation of the subjunctive mode.

I hope you've subscribed to my RSS, otherwise you won't get this message.

Buena Suerte!

El Amigo Jeff

Apr 6, How do you say "Easter" in Spanish?

How do you say Easter in Spanish?
You say "semana santa" (holy week).

In Latin America, Easter does not have the same connotation of festivity and happiness as in English speaking countries.

That may be due to the fact that, traditionally, Spanish speaking countries are generally Catholic, and our holy week is kept with solemnity and even consternation for the passion of Christ.

I remember my grandmother often commanding us kids not to play, jump, spit, run, or even laugh during Easter "because the Lord is being whipped as we speak".

For that reason, there is no equivalent to "happy Easter" in Spanish.

No, no, no, no. We don't go 'round saying "Feliz semana santa".

Ok, you can say "felices pascuas", celebrating the resurection, but by that time, the holiday is over.
